Vicki Hesterman
“I enjoy encouraging people to write well. It’s a thrill to see writers earn their first bylines and get published,” says board member Vicki Hesterman.
As a newspaper reporter, freelance writer, and photojournalist, she interviewed or photographed personalities as diverse as Billy Graham, Paul McCartney, Jimmy Carter and John McCain. She has also edited or co-authored books for both Christian and secular publishers., written numerous newspaper and magazine articles, authored several books and written chapters in others. Her photography has been published and exhibited in galleries. In the late 1980s, she helped write and edit The Earth is the Lord’s, Handle with Care, one of the early calls for Christians to be good stewards of the earth; she has encouraged other Christians to be concerned about the environment since her college days.
Her writing students at several universities have been widely published and won national awards for their writing and student magazines. In all, her student classes started six university, city and special interest magazines, including Volunteer San Diego magazine in 1991 and several city magazines still being published. Dr. Hesterman belongs or has belonged to the Society of Professional Journalists, Media Fellowship International, Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, the Evangelical Press Association, the Christian Writers Guild, National Press Photographers Association, and other professional organizations, serving on the boards of some of the above. She has been active in community volunteer work, church and Bible studies and has done short-term mission work and photo documentaries in Mexico and Europe.
Her academic research and reviews have been published in academic journals, and she has presented seven juried academic papers on various media ethics research topics at national AEJMC and other professional conferences.
Her undergraduate work was in literature, education and biology. Her Ph.D. is in communication with an emphasis on magazine and visual journalism.
